Hi we have been using your book for reference for some time now and have also been getting advise from a rural planning specialist.He has informed me that i would need to stock 130 head of pigs to warrent living on the land to look after them. As i breed rare breed pigs, kune kunes, vietnamese pot bellies and small cross bred pet pigs( which can hopefully tie in with some sort of petting/educational visits), would i still need to keep such large amounts to justify being on site full time? There would be a pretty constant turn over of litters being born and expectant sows needing close monitoring. many thanks

There is no set no of animals per acre for planning purposes if you can justify your need to be onsite.There are however codes of practice and stocking levels which you can find on the defra website which have animal welfare implications,and there are also standardised management figures such as John Nix which can be used (or not if you can show better returns) when compliling a business plan.It is not the herd no with pigs,but the frequency that they farrow which gives good reason for animal welfare reasons

50 breeding pigs plus followers will do it to get 3 years temp - and 30 breeding pigs plus followers for full planning (plus some added value hours, farm shop etc)
this is based on man hours per year initialy then on man hours and animal welfare having one farrow per week, hope this helps

hi i have just sold my last pot and wont have anymore for just over a year.have litter of pedigree kunes at the mo and some cross breeds. if you wanna e mail me your details i can put you in touch with a lady that has nice litter at the mo (all boars are castrated) or a friend has another litter due in 3 months x [email protected]
