Meet Asha and Nikolai two Caucasian Shepherd Dogs. Also known as Ovcharka or Caucasian Mountain Dogs. They are about to become parents and if you'd like to reserve a pup get in touch.
I have Asha the female and my good friend has Nikolai the Male. Both of Champion Bloodlines.
I will post up some info on the breed but I can tell you now if you're looking for a family pet that will guard your small holding then they do not come better than this breed.
When I was researching breeds I googled "best family pet and guard dog". These come top of the charts regularly.
Suit experienced dog owner with land.

Yes they are big old units. Mine lives outside permanently. They're built to withstand Russian mountain conditions so an inch of snow and the odd-5 Celsius doesn't register with her.
Of course it's how you handle this breed but Asha is fantastic with kids
You don't need to train these to guard, it's in built. They do it naturally plus you do not need to take them on a 5 mile walk everyday. If you have a large safe area for them to roam they'll be happy. Plus the odd walk weekly of course.
If you want a family pet be sure to socialise them from a pup and you'll haveno problems.
If you want an out and out guard dog only socialise them with your family. Everyone else will be view as an intruder.

That lighter one on the right looks a bit Leonberger (of which we have three)
One of our 'bergers is going to be the guard dog, she's a bit more standoffish than all the other dogs (5) and is 56kg at 18 months (still lean and growing)

They are lovely dogs. I have german shepherds these are much bigger aren't they? A few people on horse & hound forum have one, there was a thread about it. They live out on her farm just roaming around come in the Uk and I think one lives in Canada so no rules about guards dog to always be with handlers under control.

just looked on wikipedia, they're right in the same height/weight bracket as our 'bergers
Some even look remarkably similar but come from different lines

Hi JS
Yes these are much bigger than the German Shepherds. Mine roams around freely. Keeps unwanted [council] guests away

Yes they look very similar to the Leonbergers. The LB has slightly more elongated legs and a longer snout but very similar sizes weights etc.
Are your Berbers good guard dogs? I don't know that much about that breed or what they were used for.

There's no natural guarding instinct, two of ours are so friendly it's unreal, the boy is like a double sized labrador in temperament.
The puppy bitch however only came to us from abroad at 16 weeks and so wasn't as heavily socialised with other animals and people, she tends to be a bit nervy and standoffish with strangers, we suspect she'll be a reasonable deterrent with her bark and sheer size.
I think they were originally bred for rescue/pulling
We also have a newfie/bernese cross who is water rescue trained, only problem is, he only really wants to save the g/f, noone else ha ha
