A septic tank works either with your soil or a reed bed system - the tank is needed to separate solids from liquid before the liquid passes out and is purified by the soil if suitable, or a reed bed.  You can get quite shallow tanks and surface ones, or perhaps you can locate it on the surface or partially submerged on a lower bit of land to allow a fall from your pipe to the wc etc.

Water treatment plants are similar but the water discharged is clean enough to flow straight into a watercourse.  You can also add a secondary chamber where the water from that can be reused for various purposes.  These need a supply of electricity to keep a air pump running - if the pump doesn't run they a) get smelly quite quickly and B) the system doesn't work properly.

If you're doing camping you'll also need a 'holding' tank for chemical toilet waste.

As much of our wee as possible is collected for the compost heap as it is an excellent accelerator and free of charge!

We were 'camping' with porta loos and one cassette loo for nearly 2 years and emptied them into pits dug into soil banks. We used a liquid that was 'environmental friendly' to add to the water for flushing, but still had a 'pee bucket'!.

Do we take it then that you do not have a compost heap and are therefore green with envy? LOL

Hi Adrian007
I've only just read your post and although it was written a few months back, I feel compelled to offer a suggestion.
We have been using our compost loo for 6 months now and have no complaints.
This is how it works; Line the bottom of a bucket with straw, one defecates, both wee and poo into the bucket. Use wood shavings to cover ones efforts and when the bucket is full cover with straw & lid (we have four 25L buckets, with fitted lids).
The full bucket is then tipped into a closed off and secure compost bin. Ours is a 2m2 wood panelled open topped structure. Cover the emptied contents with more straw. Kitchen waste should be put into the mix too.
That's it, after a year of tipping into that bin, begin using a second bin. Leave the compost for a year at least at which point it becomes humanure.
There is info. on the net re: humanure with all the important bits.

Have fun
