We have just spent quite a lot of time writing more for our diary. It has all been lost because the super-sensitive touch pad went back to the previous page and when we went forward again the reply box was completely empty.
Is there anyway in which 'replies' being prepared for posting can (automatically or otherwise) be saved as a draft? In a similar way as something like certain email providers do?

You really are better off writing long posts in a non web application. A local text editor like wordpad (if using Windows) is probably best.
Then once finished you can copy and paste the entire contents into the forum post.

We apologise to everyone. We have just noticed that as we were writing another reply to our diary, below the post is a line which says, "View auto saved content (Yesterday 10:51pm) Last auto saved 15:49:41". And before we finished writing this reply here, the words have now appeared saying, 'Last auto saved 17:02:16'. This is good news for us.
The cursor for the first part produces a box with all that which one has typed without having posted it, and for the second part comes up with a window saying
About Saved Content
As you type, the text editor content is automatically saved so that if you had to reload this page you can restore what you've written so far.
