Hi does this mean 5 miles as the crow flies rather than actual road distance and does the same answer apply to the 3 mile distance from an airfield?

Hi Dave Is there a distinction between airport and airfield? Large barn being erected less than half a mile from airfield used by RAF. It is also frightning how many airfields are around can our friends at the planning use this against us. Dave

Hi there is no distinction in planning law between an airfield and an airport and if you are not 3 kilometres away from one then you cannot use permitted development to build a barn 40 feet high only one about 10 feet high. Which is not a useful size for agriculture, this is all a safety issue wherever aircraft take off and land the height of any building that is near the airfield is critical.

I'm feeling a bit lost and new to all of this. Could anyone tell me when i send the maps with my prior notice do they need to be just for the land i intend to build the barn on which is 3.09 acres or of the whole of my holdings within a 5 mile radius. Also do they need to be of a specified scale and finally, where the hell do i get them from. Thanks ???

Hi,
The maps need to cover all of the holdings that you own within the 5 mile radius. You can get them if you google ordnance survey and it will give you a local supplier where you can purchase the maps at a large scale.
I would get them at 1:3500 and they must include an arrow pointing north.
Regards,
Dave

How rigid are planners when it comes to building heights within 3km of an airfield/airport? Dave has always said we wouldn't be allowed above 10ft/3m which is no height at all and indeed houses are taller!
Immediately outside Humberside airport is a newish factory building (steel frame type like on industrial estates) that is at least three times the height - it's right next to the airport entrance so definitely not 3km away!
In Lincs there are lots of airfields but still seem to be barns/agri buildings built above 3m in height.
Can anyone explain why/how?

Hi Romany
The 3m / 3km rule applies to PD, buildings around the airport will have full planning
