Mushrooms

We have been looking at growing mushrooms, in sheds...... static sheds or if needed i can put them on skids so their mobile.
and we have a few questions please.
as the sheds would be for growing them and storing them are these sheds covered under permitted development ? would they be ok on the skids if not ?
also are mushrooms suitable for the need to live on the land, IE they need 24 hr care in case the heaters go off or the ventilation fans stop working... all these and the rest of the internal controlled environment will be run via electrics, that if we have a power cut it would stop working and loose the crop. and security issues if were growing expensive mushrooms.
the mushrooms grow in spurts as and when they are ready, so we would need to pick accordingly so not suitable for living off site.
many thanks

These should be okay for permitted development as I guess it would fall under Agriculture and it only has to be reasonably necessary for the purposes of agriculture. I would also think that it would fulfill the functional need if you have to be on site for temperature control, etc. I will be interested to see what others say. Piglet

Think with modern technology and msg systems to mobile phones adequate protection could be achieved without living on site, good high value return on specialist varieties, high set up and distribution costs thothere's some good info there thanks

They had warning systems 10 plus years ago on nurserys my mates dad had one but he still needed to live on site so he could deal with the problem when the alarm went off. plus i CANT afford it after all my other investments .
the set up cost doesnt seem to be too high either as far as i can see, if you use hydrogen peroxided to pasteurise the soil and everything else, you dont need a steamer.
the only thing im trying to cost etc is like you say is distribution costs, will i need a chiller van, hopefully not as where we live we have thousands of restaurants and other poss customer bases within say 30 mile radius.
just mulling over a few viable business ideas at the moment but think shrooms seem to give a good profit.......... but how easy and viable it is yet i have to work out fully.

p.s read up on hydrogen peroxide............... feed it too your animals in their water !!! wash stuff down with it use it clean out wounds and cuts on you and animals, put it in water buts to kill of fly lava etc and sterilise the water it is amazing stuff.
your prob thinking im crazy but its true, they have cured many people of aids and one i personally hate, cancer !!!!
you put like a pin head of this liquid in like 100 gals of water for ingestion so its almost nothing but eats all pathogens inside our bodies.
if anyone is interested, i managed to download 'the' book on it for free as its normally sold so i have a pdf copy i could email to anyone interested in this.................... it will do the job BETTER and with less nastys than most of the stuff you have to buy for doing what we do.......... i also used it in water to feed plants and their growth esp the roots is just amazing!

Glad to say most councils/planning officers are about 20 years behind the times - probably apples to mobile technology!!Think with modern technology and msg systems to mobile phones adequate protection could be achieved without living on site, good high value return on specialist varieties, high set up and distribution costs tho

I think you would want to develop (shipping) container growing units and have a few with high value varieties inside (security issue). They need to be as automated as possible so as to allow for the event that if something goes wrong, you need to be on hand to put it right forthwith.
The problems would arise that could it be argued, that if your automated systems failed, would this seriously affect your crop, i.e. if something went wrong at night, would the crop be ruing by the time you open the doors at 8am in the morning upon your arrival.
I would pay special attention to mushroom varieties and find the ones that had more special needs than others. You'd also want to address crop rotation so that you are facing potential problems at any time of the year rather than just one period of the year. By having just one crucial time of the year for things to go wrong, planners will limit your time of living on site to just that period.
If space permits, it would be good to have several practices going on, on your unit. It always helps ones case to have several 'needs' to be living on the your land.

Kept in the DARK and fed on SH!T when dealing with most councils.
i hear what your saying SD, and that was my point behind it, do we have a good enough need to be there 24/7........... im leaning towards it not being good enough for the planners. but would make a good second income and not the main to keep us on the land.
I have spoken to burl, albeit a quick visit but the good lady and i are keen on alpacas, as one we have a horse background and love the animals too, plus making clothing from them that we can sell. plus the bonus of them needing 24/7 care.
we havent sold our house yet so we got some thinking time until our buyer arrives.
thanks for the feedback guys !
