Hi
I am a registered goat dairy and am looking at selling all my products, including free range foods, on the gate. My question is that I have diversified slightly and now have a goats milk soap business using my own goats milk. Would I have to apply for planning permission to sell my soaps on the gate?

Hi Any product that is derived from your animals that are agricultural can be sold at your farm gate even if they have processed, it is the size of the operation that may require you to apply for planning permission. If you are just using your kitchen to carry out the process then no planning permission would be required, if you were using part of a farm building and the process was on a larger scale then you may do and you have to pay business rates on the part of the premises you are using.

I was hoping you woould say something along those lines. I have had funding from the LA RDP dept for diversification which has purchased a website and a vehicle. They have been trying to help me with my planning application and thought I may need change of use but, from something I read in your first book, I was under the impression that I didn't! Thanks again.
