New quote came in for electric £12000. So next option is solar. Anyone has any advice or experience they could share. It would need to be man enough to pump a bore hole as we cannot get mains water either! Would you believe we only 1/4 mile outside a village. Thanks in advance

With solar you are obviously going to need a battery bank to build up and store the power and an invertor.  You are also likely to want a generator for when you need more power than you have available.  There's a company who do a clever bit of 'management kit' with an invertor built it which will auto start a generator when required but turn it off so as not to waste fuel when it's not being used.  The generator can also be timed so if for example every morning you are up, washing machine on etc the generator can be timed so that the power is ready and you can tap a wind turbine into the system as well.

Hi Jazziejay

Yes solar is man enough for anything! BUT.......

You need to closely work out your potential usage both peak and continuous power.

Fundamentals will be:

  • Battery bank (what size?)
  • Generator (auto start) for high/ peak load support and additional charger to the battery bank
  • Solar Inverter charger
  • standard inverter charger

Really best to get a couple of companies involved to discuss what they can do. We have a basic system of a Victron Inverter / charger plus 1000 amhrs battery bank and 10 KW auto start LPG generator

The above companies are all useful to know and have a wealth on information on there websites; its also worth subscribing to Home Power Magazine in the USA as they have been doing it for ages.

Good Luck
