Hi all can anyone tel me how do you name a piece of land that you own, also how do you get a post address there?
obviously we will all need this piece of information once we have purchased and moved on to it.

Hi barrymoore,

I think it's a simple as letting the Post Office know. What you decide to call your bit of land is down to you, much like naming a house.

My dad was a terror,,, one house we lived in was called 'Knups'  :o

Hi
The normal procedure is to ask the post office for your post code then apply to the council (yes they do have someone that deals with this) with the proposed name of your holding and they will tell you if it is ok or not. The reason for this is to save confusion over the address in the case of an emergency and say an ambulance was required.

Hi Dave and all,

just had a mad aftertnoon with the post office, it turns out that the planning people are quite happy to do there part and were realy quite helpful and direct, we sent them a plot of the land with the hp number on it and then after a week they called us back to say that the post office will not put a postal address on a piece of land without a building on it, and they also said they are refusing people with stables as they are not Bulidings!!

anyone know where to go from here!

thanks in advance Derek

Hi, when I bought my land(4.5acres) 2 years ago, I have a terrible time trying to get a postcode, the council and royal mail said had to have a building on the land and pay council tax. I put a shed on the land but still they refused to issue a postcode, so I had a word with the friendly postman who drove by my field everyday and asked him what the postcode was for the area. He gave me the postcode, I named my field, changed all my correspondence to the field address and the postman now delivers to me. I live on the field(illegally), but my bank statements, student loan and land registry deeds are all registered at my land. Perhaps it might be worth speaking to your local postman.

Good luck  Dolly :)

Having spent the best part of the last year looking for and at land we note that we have been getting to them from the Post Code given by the land agent or estate agent.  A majority of land has at one time been part of a larger farm or estate this farm or estate has a post code and where parts have been hoved off these share the same post code.

What I would suggest is that you decide on a name for your property using the post code of the main estate or farm and get loads of catalogue and spam mail delivered I am sure the local postie  will if you have a sign for your smallholding and a letter box that he will deliver your post and thereby you get your post code by default.

The post office does not give names or numbers to property this is done by the local highways department in you local council if your land was part of a larger farm it has a post code you just have to tell teh council the name of said fields and they willl infomr the post office, you can also inform the post office when you move on to this land.

Hi All
Thank you for your replies,

We have indeed named our field and used the post code given for the houses on the other side of the land!
this was all ok by the council, but it is the post office that is saying no they will not reconise it.  So I think what we will do is put a big sign up with the nake of the field which is Alpaca Meadow, and ill put a post box under it and try sending a letter to it and if possible grab the postman and point it our!

good idea

thanks you all

Hi all yes we put up a post box and I flaged the postman down and told him about the land and the box, we then sent the letter and sure enough it turned up!  Now what happened next was a bit bazzar! because a lady riding her horse past the field called out to me and asked if she could talk to me, of course I beconed her on to the land.  She said she worked for the council and was realy upset that the post office had taken the angle they had, so she asked if she could take a picture of the post box and when she got back to work she would re apply for us and follow it up until we got permision! how cool is that! but we then sent another letter and sure enough we got it! so it emplys that you shoud just go a head even if you are told no

regards Derek and best of luck to you all
