We are thinking of having solar panels, maybe on the barn roof or even the house roof if it gets built. Does anyone have any experience of them at all ? Not really sure how it all works. A friend told me she has been contacted by a company who will install them on her roof for free, but other things I have read seem to want payment.

I would be very grateful if someone could enlighten me about this before I ring a company to enquire, so I know what I am talking about.

Thanks in advance

There are shed loads of companies about now,it depends how much you are going to use most of these schemes involve spending 15k and recouping you investment over a period of years.
I am offgrid completely for all services relying on wind and solar and battery bank.I only have 200w of panels which produces on a bright day 5 amps an hour which charges a large battery bank along with wind and generator. Most panels you see on roofs are 200w to 400w each If your demand is relatively low this is an option. The grid tie in option is designed to reduce you bills,a battery bank set up is more self suufficient. You can buy solar panels for approx £2 per watt as a guideline.I question why there is so many bods out there doing this they are obviously making a quick buck out of it.Am sure if you wanted to go the grid tie in route you could source the panels and fir and just get them signed off by a contractor. If I had a spare grand I would buy another 400w

I have a friend who has done roofing works for a solar panel installer and he tells me they are all chacing the big jobs with £15k plus worth as they get £3k for each instalation and it takes about 2 days to install, the main money starts to run out in aprill next year so act fast , there are now 20 or so installers in our area , the bubble will soon burst !!!!!!!!
And they are all in a group that fixes the price if you drop below an agreed level you get kicked out and are no longer a registered installer , where is the watchdog on that one ?

Hi,

Photo voltaic solar panels generate electricity and the surplus can be sold to the national grid at an enhanced rate. This is called the feed in tariff and has been guaranteed by the government for 25yrs. Companies that install for free take the feed in payment for themselves. You get free electricity. If you pay for your own installation the feed in tariff is yours. The payback period varies on the size of the installation but I seem to recall seeing an average of about 10-12yrs.
