Recently we were chatting to the owner of a snack van in our old home village in Devon. We were his last customers and he was delighted to have someone to chat to.

The conversation we had with him was very interesting. Way back in the '80's he had a mobile home on a small plot of land being less than 1ha, the local council tried to have him removed and the appeals and court case went on for a number of years. There were local houses available for him and his spouse but these were outside of their finacial means at the time. At the final court case the local council was instructed to back down and pay this persons expenses. The reason was that during this debacle the person in question wrote to the then PM, Margaret Thatcher. Who wrote to him telling him that the council could not force him from his home unless they were prepared to rehouse him and should there be a need for him to live close to the area where he had his mobile home they would have to ensure that there was housing there for him. The council duly backed down and he was awarded costs and compensation for stress and harassment.

Not sure if it would still apply today. but if you do go and live on your land and the council tries to eveict you they still do have a duty of care to rehouse you even under current law.
