Hi David.
I was given a copy of your book for Christmas, and found it very interesting indeed. I was lucky enough to be able to purchase 38 acres of flat pastureland with buildings last year. The main block of buildings date from the 1930s and are block built with clay tile roofs, and comprise of a run of 8 single height stables with a double height barn attached making a T shape. They would convert into a great house.

On Page 21 of your book you say "You will not be allowed to build an Oak framed or brick built barn. The reason for this is about 5 years after its construction you could apply to convert it into a dwelling and you would probably get planning permission. Local Planning Authorities are well aware of this loophole and are determined not to allow uncontrolled development in the countryside using this method."

There were no further details of this in the rest of the book, as you concentrated on new build barns. Could you give me some pointers as to where I can find additional information re planning permission for existing buildings, and the sort of ground to apply under, and the best strategy to employ. The main barn has become structurally unsound and would need to be demolished down to ground level, so I don't know if that would have a bearing on the best approach to take. Thanks for a great book. Pete.
