I have 12 acres of land - what do you think is the best business to start up?

It has a few stables, a new barn, electricity and water but the access down a track isn't great.

I've been made redundant and fancy working for myself along with my 2 sisters.

You have got to have Alpacas :D Thats how we got started after being made redundant.
Do you have access to nice walks around your property.?
Good luck in whichever you choose.

Hi,

If you don't have any animal experience chickens are probably the easiest and cheapest to start with. You can have them for eggs and/or meat. You can also breed them to sell as chicks and point of lay. Also you can turn the eggs into products - cakes, quiches etc, This gives you a number of income streams which is always useful. There are plenty of books on chickens and also info on the net.

It's a matter of doing a bit of research on various options and picking those you feel most comfortable with - after all you want to enjoy yourself!

Don't forget even if you're going into partnership with family it's still a good idea to put things down on paper - whos does what, how much time/money everyone will contribute how the partnerships profits (hopefully!) will be divided, how the partnership can be dissolved etc, as this could avoid problems later.

Good Luck

hello mate

i have british rare breed pigs, tamworths, british lop, middle white, british saddleback and osb's, pigs are great so much fun and yes......nice to eat, some of the above breeds are on the RBST endangered and vunerable lists so i would hope that anyone with land and the confidence to rear and breed british rare breeds would give it ago, pigs are very sociable so please keep at least two, stick with gilts to begin with and use A.I. to get them in pig to begin with and then you can think about getting a boar later, i have three boars to 15 gilts/sows and the boars are real soft cuddly animals but beware never ever trust any pig always be on your guard as they can knock you over a fence with a single flick of their snout, most of the times it is to get your attention, anyway their are loads of web sites, breed clubs and books to help you get started and your 12 acres is more than enough as i have all my pigs on 7 acres......go for it you will love pigs !
