Hi Vicky - welcome to the forum. Just thought we should let you know something important about Burl and his wife - they are absolutely the tops when it comes to alpacas. Do a search for Dunreyth and you will see what we mean.

Hi Burl

I have just joined this forum as I want to learn as much as I can about running a self-financing smallholding before I embark on this 4 year plan!!

Currently Volunteering at 2 City farms in London. I have been at one of them for the past 2 years and am considering applying for a job there (just come up) however this is primarily an open/petting farm filled with politics and I am not sure whether this is the best route toward my own venture.
The other route I am considering is putting out some requests on various farming forums, like this one, for work on other livestock smallholdings around the SE of England.
Do you have any advice/opinions on this to guide me? (I am also quite old).

Hi there Farmersarl

There's a thing called WWOOF which may interest you which basically entails you volunteering for farm work on organic and self-sufficient farms.

You can get all the info on it at WWOOF UK

Good luck to you :)

Hi if Farmersarl is still reading this forum, there is also Help Exchange (HelpX) which is similar to WWOOF but is not limited to organic farms (indeed some of the hosts run B&Bs or hostels rather than farms!).

It is also a (much) cheaper membership and the worldwide option is included (with WWOOF each country has a separate membership fee charged)

Hope this is helpful
