Hi all
For a while now we have been looking into uping our turkey numbers but everywhere we looked it seemed there was problems with licensing from slaughtering to selling them on.
Well at last i have finally got some clear answers as of today from a very helpful lady at the meat production board.
1 You only need a license to slaughter turkeys if you are slaughtering for others or you want to use a stunner ( you also have to be trained in using a stunner at around £70 )
2 you can sell your Turkeys from the farm gate as long as you comply with food safety standards and you are a small producer ( under 10,000 birds per year) with out any problems
Please see PDF at
http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/enforcement/enfe09047.pdf
Hope this is of help for any others wanting to have turkeys
