This is just a selection of the businesses that you can run, the ones that make money and the ones that don’t, or would need to be carried out on such a large scale it would be factory farming or would require a massive investment beyond most people’s means.

There are two things to be considered when starting the business; firstly to pick one that will enable you to get planning permission to build a house and secondly to make some money so that you will be able to live off the land. Any business must adhere to the tests or you won’t get planning permission to build a house. A main animal enterprise is usually required and an addon businesses would be desirable to make seasonal money to pay the bills. The art of running a successful smallholding is to diversify and take any and every opportunity to make money.
